Why Are We Funding PBS?
Segment # 263
Prior to the election at the DNC on a PBS news special Judy Woodruff formerly of PBS (she stepped down as an anchor in 2022) accused Donald Trump of calling Netanyahu and trying to get him to hold off on a cease fire with Hamas so that Kamala or Biden would not get credit. Woodruff based her August 2024 on air report on a statements from Axios and Reuters that subsequently turned out were never made. In essence she lied to hurt Trump before the election. This biased reporting is stupid from a respected journalist and from an experienced on camera talent. It will not easily be forgiven coming from a network that has yet to issue a formal apology and retraction and just happens to be funded in part by taxpayer dollars.
I have been associated with PBS for almost thirty years and have warned good friends and colleagues that they are playing with fire in PBS/NPR not seeking a more centrist position in their news division. These are good people and I don’t want to see anyone lose their job; however, a few arrogant elitists just handed the incoming Trump administration a rationale to defund PBS/NPR. Unlike 2016 there is a mandate now that will make punishing PBS and NPR much easier. It’s potentially a sad time for an organization that has in the past elevated the quality of American broadcasting.
PBS and NPR have only exacerbated the tension between Trump and the legacy media. Note: Vice President Kamala Harris received predominantly favorable coverage from the three major news networks after becoming the Democratic nominee, a new study reveals. Conducted by the conservative Media Research Center (MRC), the study found that 84% of Harris's coverage was positive, in sharp contrast to the 89% negative coverage of former President Trump. The MRC analyzed comments from reporters, anchors, and guests on NBC News, ABC News, and CBS News evening programs, starting July 21.
